Chicago

< 1 min read

Chicago is a major port city located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Chicago was a bustling hub for maritime trade, serving as a key connection between the agricultural Midwest and eastern industrial markets.

Relevance: Chicago was a central point for grain, lumber, and coal shipping on the Great Lakes, with many vessels—including schooners, steamers, and barges—frequenting its ports. Its importance in maritime commerce is evident in numerous shipwreck accounts, with vessels often departing Chicago en route to other Great Lakes destinations.
