Net Tonnage

< 1 min read

Net Tonnage (NT)

Net Tonnage (NT) represents the usable or revenue-generating capacity of a ship, reflecting the spaces available for cargo, passengers, and commercial use. It is derived by subtracting the non-revenue spaces (e.g., engine rooms, crew quarters) from the Gross Tonnage.

Key Features:

 • Measurement Unit: Like Gross Tonnage, it is a dimensionless index, not a weight measurement.

 • Scope: Focuses on spaces that contribute to the ship’s commercial operation, such as cargo holds and passenger accommodations.

 • Formula: NT = (GT - spaces not used for revenue) × multiplier based on the ship’s depth and other factors.

Applications:

 • Regulations: Used to assess operational rules specific to cargo and passenger transport.

 • Economic Relevance: Reflects the ship’s earning capacity for cargo or passenger services.
